Guide to finding the real joy in Exercise & Physical Fitness, alternative name - Baked Alaska!

Introduction by Vlada Korolova

Written by a woman that in my eyes is as delightful and multifaceted as the dessert 'Baked Alaska'. Just like the dessert, an ice cream covered with an igloo of meringue emerging from the oven, this woman has many interesting layers to her. Read on and you will see why the title to this piece is so apt. This lady a very experienced, driven and hard working Romana's Pilates teacher and practitioner, is a real life inspiration for how physical fitness impacts and drives life outside of the Pilates studio walls. Enjoy!

Guide to finding the real joy in exercise & physical fitness

Author, Stephany Esposito

Physical fitness has always been an important part of my life. Growing up in Alaska, it was sort of the "prerequisite" for living in "The last Frontier". I moved to New York where I got married and became a mom of three very active kids. My exercise routine became very few and far between, not just because of time constraints but I also started to suffer from lower back pain after the birth of my second child. The type of exercises I used to do left me in more pain afterwards, than if I were to not do anything at all. I had heard of the benefits of Pilates and decided to give it a try. In 2003 I began my Pilates regime and only after a few sessions, I was hooked. I couldn't believe how energised I felt after my workout instead of the usual energy drain I would feel from pushing so hard. Pilates taught me how to move my body safely and with purpose, as a result, build more energy in the body, more flexibility, more strength overall and the best part, my back was pain free. Doing Pilates just made me happier.

In 2010 my family and I moved abroad to live in Italy. It has been an amazing experience but my Pilates regime suffered. And then my back pain came back. I realised then that I needed Pilates to be a permanent way of life for me, not just a three day a week exercise. I joined the Romana's Pilates Program in Milan, Italy. I've done extensive hours of training in Italy and New York City and have had the fortune of traveling to all parts of Europe and the U.S  to train with some of the Masters in the industry such as Sari Mejia-Santos, Cynthia Shipley, Cynthia Lochard, Gerome Weinberg, Antonio Rabara, Juanita Lopez and Lori-Coleman Brown. I Certified in 2015 and I am currently teaching in my own studio, "The Pilates Edit" in Italy as well as furthering my Pilates education during the Summer months at "True Pilates New York" in NYC.
